Stage 1: Learner Licence
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a licence to drive. This requires you to pass a learner licence test, which is a theory-only road rules test based on the official New Zealand Road Code.
You can obtain a copy of the rode code from a library, bookstore or NZTA approved licensing agent (such as the Automobile Association (AA), Vehicle Testing New Zealand (VTNZ) or Vehicle Inspection New Zealand (VINZ).
 
When you feel ready to sit your test, you should visit one of the above agents.
You will be asked to fill out an application form and:
• Pay a Learner Licence application fee of $48.20

• Pay a Learner Licence test fee of $45.70

• Provide a birth certificate, passport or other proof of identity and age

• Provide a letter or bill that shows your name and current address

• Pass an eyesight test (or provide an eyesight certificate from your doctor)

• Provide a signature and have your photograph taken Conditions of driving under a Learner Licence

1. You must display learner plates on the car when you are driving (which you can obtain from one of the NZTA agents listed above).

2. You must be accompanied at all times by a person who has held a full driver licence for at least two years. This person must sit in the front passenger seat beside you.

3. You may only carry passengers on the approval of this person. Once you have your learner licence, book your driving lessons with Apple Driving School and get as much driving experience as you can.
